Sound analysis

1) Watch any of the sound clips in the  Film Language booklet  that we didn't get to in class and  write answers to the questions  to go with each clip on your blog. E.g.  A Clockwork Orange ,  Life On Mars,   Once Upon A Time In The West ,  Once Upon A Time In America . The clips are all available on the Media Shared drive M: > Resources > A Level > Film Language. 2) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film: Diegetic and non-diegetic sound Parallel and contrapuntal sound Sound bridges Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip: Music Dialogue Voiceover Sound effects You also need to  highlight  or put in  bold  any use of media language. Funny games How would you describe this use of music? In the scene, classical diegetic music was played within the car to resemble them as being mage

Media Awards Film Review

write mini-reviews of your THREE favourite films and to post them up onto your coursework blog for the final lesson before half term (Friday 20/10). Don't forget to consider  all aspects of media language - cinematography, mise-en-scene (CLAMPS), sound, editing - using as much media terminology as possible (don't forget to highlight keywords); and also consider the film's use of genre conventions, how it will appeal to audiences (including dominant/oppositional readings), its use of narrative structure/roles, etc.  Essentially, you should be applying all you've learnt on the course so far. Click My favourite movie that was shown on media awards was "Click" as it was more of a sci-fi/crime genre. The use of cinematography throughout the scnenes looked very sophisticated and their editing skills made the film look very professional. When the camera zoomed into the clicking of the characters fingers, the scene began to look disorientated and the sound slows

film noir research

Image
The term "film noir" comes from the French term for "black film" or film of the night. Film noir movies include different genres and styles  of movies, such as  police, gangster and  detective  movies. Film noir movies are mostly shot at night or in dark places where the scenery is dark which keeps the full focus on the main characters. The stories often take place in bars, casinos, run down apartments/hotels or even back alleys.  Film noir movie scenes often have a lot of shadows due to the use of key and back lighting but no filler lights. There are also often dark shadows across the actors face as a result of back lighting. The shadows and darkness created on a whole makes film noir movies feel more mysterious and stressful to add more tension within the scenes.   Characters in the film noir genre are often greedy, jealous and/or out for revenge. Story lines are usually based around a robbery, fraud, blackmail or murders. The hero in a lot of film noir movies ar

parallel and contrapuntal sound

Image
In my music video, I used a range of different clips and images which were parallel the sound track used. I used videos connoting love and affection from different parts of the Caribbean culture to show the hardship they've been going through. The sound track is quite slow paced which allows the audience to reminisce the good times that they share with each other despite the trials and tribulations they go through each day. In order for me to show contrapunta l sound, i could have used a violent scene(s) to show binary opposition. Teacher WWW: Pace of editing matched the sound Montage - appropriate images (still) Use of slow motion matched the tempo of the song Music matched music video - parallel sound Effective sound bridge  Teacher EBI: Include description in blog Needs a contrapuntal scene Students WWW:  Good choice of music Parallel sounds were used clearly Matched the pace of the music Included a sound bridge  Lyrics match

Lighting: still image analysis

Image
The lighting being shown is low-key as we can see a strong contrast between the light, dark and shadows which have been created. Top lighting has been used to make the actor look more glamorous as it has accentuated her cheek bones. The smoke effects used have created an obscured look as her outfit and part of her face is smothered with smoke. The cigarette and the darkness all give the impression that this is a crime film. The lighting shown is low-key as most of the still image is completely dark. Top lighting is used to make the actors facial features appear more rounded and makes her look more glamorous. The darkness adds a sense of mystery to the image. High-key lighting has been used to make the still image appears more realistic. Under lighting has been used to create an almost distorted effect. We know this because part of his face appears to be darker. The use of this lighting makes the still seem extremely serious. Low-key lighting has been used to create shadows as th

Film Poster Analysis

1 - in my opinion this looks like a sci-fi, action and drama film aimed at the middle age generation. i think the film is about a character in the future who is trying to escape conflict within the city. the yellow shades of colour surrounding the man and the city shows how he's trying the over throw the darkness surrounding him. the white lights around  the city could symbolise all eyes are on him. 2 - in my opinion this looks like a horror film that has comedy aspects to it. i think this film is  about a group of people who have traumatic experiences within similar surroundings. the characters at the top could represent them being the main obstacle the 3 characters face. the facial expression from the male at the bottom could represent his being overpowered which has caused him to raise his hands to try and defend himself. having 'scary movie' in red could symbolise blood which could consequently result in an individual dying. 3 - in my opinion this looks like a d

Film & TV Language: Mise-en-scene blog tasks

Image
Mise-en-scene is a critical aspect to our work on film language and textual analysis. Remember the mnemonic that will help you recall the different aspects of mise-en-scene:  CLAMPS . Costume Lighting Actor (placement and movement) Make-up Props Setting 1) Find a distinctive  still image  and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson. The two characters are actors from Jekyll & Hyde - a well known piece of text within English literature. The film producer deliberately made the actors dress up in formal attire to show their respectable appearance that is shown to the Victorian era. Choosing to shine the light on Dr Jekyll's face makes the audience perceive that he's a respectable law abiding citizen being over powered my Mr Hyde - a menace to society. Making Mr Hyde appear to take up most of the image in comparison to Dr Jekyll, makes the audience think of Jekyll as being a lower life form. Dr Jekyl
