Lighting: still image analysis


The lighting being shown is low-key as we can see a strong contrast between the light, dark and shadows which have been created. Top lighting has been used to make the actor look more glamorous as it has accentuated her cheek bones. The smoke effects used have created an obscured look as her outfit and part of her face is smothered with smoke. The cigarette and the darkness all give the impression that this is a crime film.

The lighting shown is low-key as most of the still image is completely dark. Top lighting is used to make the actors facial features appear more rounded and makes her look more glamorous. The darkness adds a sense of mystery to the image.

High-key lighting has been used to make the still image appears more realistic. Under lighting has been used to create an almost distorted effect. We know this because part of his face appears to be darker. The use of this lighting makes the still seem extremely serious.

Low-key lighting has been used to create shadows as there's a large amount of shade covering the characters faces. The light through the curtains make the still image look like natural lighting has been used.

High key lighting has been used to make it look like natural light is shinning down. Top lights have been used so that the characters facial expressions and features are accentuated. This brings a realistic look to the picture.

Low key lighting has been used to create darkness. Back lighting has also been used to create strong shadows and a silhouette. These are all expected conventions of a horror. Therefore this creates a sense of fear and mystery.

High key lighting has been used so the lighting looks natural. Top lighting has also been used to accentuate the characters facial features and expressions. The shadows created suggest mystery and bring a sense of darkness.

Discussion points Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this? In my opinion, I believe Chiron was a character of few words because he was misunderstood for being different. The villains in the movie (which were the other school kids) chose to mock him and make him feel inferior to the rest of his class mates.
