Deutschland 83: Close Textual Analysis

Scene 1: Garden/BBQ scenes (East & West Germany) 4.58 – 8.20 and 34.00 – 37.20 Representation of East: Lot of background noise inside and outside the house. They enjoy themselves more than in the West. Its a very welcoming atmosphere with the sense of togetherness. Stereotype that the working class know how to have a good time when they have a little. The popular culture on music in the 80s creates nostalgia. Also represents how alien everything is to him in the West when he doesn't recognise any of the music. Commodities like Coffee are a luxury in the East which further gives historical context that the people in the East didn't have much. Representation of West: Lots of food on a large table in the garden. Quite rich, but everyone isn't together, they are in their own circles in a small group. The party is a lot quieter but this could be because this is a formal gathering and not a birthday party like in the East. Division in capitalism but with a really go

The Guardian: The main actor Jonas Nay portrays Martin 'superbly'. The series is near perfect with perfect moments like the supermarket scene when Moritz stares at the produce in awe. Telegraph: The detail in capturing how people behaved in this period is 'extremely well done'. They show the cheap clothes, the excitement teenagers have of listening to illicit western pop music. They showed the difference in language between the two sides. 2) What criticisms are made of the show? Telegraph: The show lacks some drama with it being a period drama. Guardian: The show lost half its viewers on the last episode in Germany. 3) Why did the Telegraph suggest that Deutschland 83 did the 'period' aspect of 'period drama' so well? The sho

Mail Online review of Capital 1) Re-read the  Mail Online review of  Capital . Why does it suggest that  Capital  features a left-wing ideology? The review of Capital suggests that it  features a left-wing ideology  because it shows how the hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant. This shows Capitalism-hard work and shows a positive view of immigrants, therefore makes the audience feel sympathetic towards them. They also mention other people like a  Muslim  man and a crusading lawyer. 2) Choose  three  quotes from the review that are particularly critical of  Capital  and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why? " With a fizzle like a firework on a wet night, Capital (BBC1) dribbled to a soggy ending."  I agree with this. Even though I think that Capital has contemporary representations of people in society, the storyline wasn't really clear and didn't really have a clear ending. "The last 20 minutes contained no

Read the factsheet and answer the following questions: 1) What does Marxism suggest regarding power in society? Marxist's believe that Power was held by a minority (the elite or bourgeoisie) who had  access to capital and could use their money and power to  generate more wealth .  The majority of the population (the mass or proletariat) had  only their labour (strength and time) to help them make a living.  Industrialisation had meant that the elite were the only ones  who had access to the means of production.  Without the ability to produce for themselves, the mass were  dependent on the elite for survival.  To maximise profits, the elite needed to get as much labour from  the m

Representation questions - blog task

Group 1:  To what extent do the representations in Capital reflect the concerns of modern 21st century London life?  [25 marks] Capital is a good example of a state-of-the-nation drama and highlights concerns such as sexism and the inequality between women and men. Capital continues to have references to problems such as sexism throughout its show and through Quentina. Quentina a character in the show is repeatedly mentioned and shown to experience harass. An example of this is during the first episode of Capital where Quentina visits her boss to receive her payment despite not being able to legally work. During this scene she is forced to kiss her boss on the cheek in return for the money. This scene highlights the key problems which society still face and how the she is still harassed  and struggles to make a living whilst other characters in the show such as Roger who’s main problem in the show is his bonus amount whereas Quentina is seen to work hard despite earning little money.
