Cinematography blog tasks

Find the opening sequence to a film or TV drama of your choice on YouTube and embed the video in a blogpost called 'Cinematography blog tasks'.

1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.

We expect a film to begin with a typical establishing shot so we are able to get some kind of information on what to expect through the film. The establishing shot shows the audience the setting so we can get some kind of feel for the film. In the beginning of this film this is shown through the use of tilt camera movement as the boy in the yellow jacket leaves the house and waves at his brother watching through the window. The camera the goes into a low angle shot which makes the house appear as if It's overpowering him. The use of low-key lighting makes the house appear creepy which creates a spooky effect for the audience. The use of the diegetic sound when his brother says "be carful" creates enigma codes for the audience as he makes it seem as if something unfortunate is going to happen to the boy which is later revealed within the film. The camera then goes into a close up of the paper boat as it travels down the water stream. The camera turns into a tracking shot of the boy following the boat down the water stream at a steady pace. The camera also uses a backwards tracking shot to show the boys playfulness as he splashes the puddles within the clip. As the boy hits his head against the sign post, the camera goes into a P.O.V shot which adds realism to the scene as the audience is able to sympathise with the boys pain. When the boat eventually reaches the drain, the camera goes into a close up which makes the audience feel as if this is going to be a significant sceen with the film. Whe the clown appears to be lurking with the drain, the camera does a shot/reverse shot on the childs face and the clowns face. This allows the audience to acknowledge that the childs focus was purely on the clowns facial expressions. At the end when the boy tries to reach for the paper boat, the sceen cuts out which creates enigma codes for the audience as we don't know whether the boy is safe or not.

2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

Within the opening scene, the use of the tracking shots allowed the audience to follow the story. It's almost as if we're bing taken on a journey as witnessing how the film progresses from scene to sceen. The use of vlose ups allows the audience to clearly establish the main focus of a scene. The main focus within the opening scene was the paper boat. We as the audience are able to infer this as the camera shots and movements all showed the boy following the boat along the stream.

3) Find and analyse four film or TV stills. Embed the images in your blog and analyse the camera shot/angle and what they communicate to the audience.

The use of the low angled medium long shot makes the characters appears more superior as it seems as if the characters are overpowering the audience. The facial expressions of the characters appear to be quite sinister which could cause the audience to perceive them as being the villain instead of the heros. We also associate guns with violence scenes. Them waving them about makes them seem as if they're a danger to society.

The use of the close up shots on both the characters faces makes the audience feel as if the film is a contrast between a hysterical comedy and an action film. The character on the left gas a facial expression that can be perceived as him being shocked to see a particular face within their neighbourhood. The right character has screwed eyebrows which could be linked to him being in conflict with another member of his neighbourhood.

The use of the close up shot of the two characters makes the audience feel as if their is a conflict between artificial intelligence and humanity. It's as if the characters eyes have a story within themselves. On one side you have the alien who has lived a life of fear and has seen everything she loves crumble before her vs a soldier who has no choice but to follow the orders he's given by his ranking commanders.

The use of the mid shot allows the audience to focus on the characters upper body. We associate capes with heros or vigilantes fighting for the grater good of the society. The fact that he's horizontal and the city appears to be blurred out could be linked to him having super fast speed which is causing to to be travelling fast. This can be inferred through the movement of his cape in the air.
